After you get your web site built, you need to get a File Transfer Protocol client. Regardless of what FTP program you use, the following settings are common with almost all available FTP applications. These instructions are specific to a popular shareware program named: WS_FTP LE. If you do not already have an FTP application and use a Windows machine, click here to download WS_FTP LE. If you have a Macintosh computer and need a FTP client or are having problems uploading your information, please contact Technical Support. Launch WS_FTP.

Once you have the program open, the Connect screen will come up automatically. You will need to make several entries on this screen to successfully log onto our ftp server. If you have not already done so, create a new profile named 'maqs.net' in the Config Name (or Profile Name) entry box. Fill in the remaining boxes as follows:

Host Name = www.maqs.net
Host Type = auto detect
User I.D. = (the dial-up username you were assigned)
Password = (the dial-up password you were assigned)
Account = (leave this blank)
Remote Dir = public_html (*very important*)
Local Dir = (wherever you want files you download into your computer to be stored)

Use the reference dialog box at the end of this page when typing in your settings on the screen. Note that the check mark next to 'Anonymous Login' is removed, Also note that in the 'Remote Host' (or the 'Remote Dir') box that the member pages 'public_html' is typed in. This is very important! Your web pages will not work if you do not include this member page. Once you have the settings typed in, click on the 'Save' (or 'Save Config') button. That way you can call up this connection whenever you want to connect to maqs.net to upload files to your home member pages

Connecting and Transferring Files:

Click on "OK" to begin the connection. Once you are connected you will be at your home member pages on our file server. After you have connected, a list of files will appear in the left-hand column. These are files in your Local Directory from which you may choose to upload. Click on the file you want to transfer to highlight it, then click on the arrow that points to right to start the transfer.

Troubleshooting:

Please note that your initial web site file MUST be called index.html This means that the first page that people will see must be named: index.html. If you are unable to save the file on your hard drive with this exact name, simply upload it and once it is there you may rename it. Highlight it and click on "Rename". Then type in index.html and click on "OK".Please remember that letter case is critical to uploading your data correctly.

The most common error that people encounter when trying to get their website up and running is that they do not store their files in the public_html member pages Make sure that you have 'public_html' in the 'Remote Dir' box on the Connection screen and you will never need to worry about this as you will automatically be put in that member pages when you connect!

Another common mistake is not having the case in the HTML code match the files that you have uploaded. Please note that HTML is case sensitive. This means that if your file is called: Picture.jpg, that your HTML must be written exactly the same way. Many people store all of their files in lower case letters to make things easier to remember.

To access your new web site use the following format in your web browser:
http://www.maqs.net/~username
Remember to replace the word username with your personal username/login I.D.!
